Sonne (Pronounced Sonn-uh)

Sonne are a five piece band from the UK south coast. They blend alternative rock, post punk and krautrock influences together with a prog rock edge into an intense, genre-bending sound and live show that’s impossible to ignore. As a result of the fusion of the aforementioned genres, they create a striking, bold and enigmatic sound that captures audiences and listeners. Already trying their hand at styles such as dance rock, moody alternative/hard rock and modern post punk, Sonne have established the fact that they are not content by remaining comfortable in one wheelhouse, defying categorization, showing over their short lifespan as a band a number of daring evolutions sonically, and there are no signs of stopping.

The Noise Exchange

Words by Tijana Mitevska & Amber Miller

Sonne were the first to take the stage, and what a set they gave us! The anticipation of waiting for their opening song bridged from an extended interval of heavy bass and low drum beats – a feeling felt by all. Their biggest supporters stood right behind us, exuberating our own emotions and energy to align with theirs. The set was fantastic and full of energy, proving to the audience why they were made for the stage. Their most notable work was definitely their leading single, ‘Bear Trap’, infusing a composition of organic guitar and bold vocals of Thomas, the lead singer. An underrated moment was Valentina’s backing vocals, harmonising brilliantly with Tom and her own bass. What worked so well with their set was their engagement with the audience and each other within the band. It was clear from the smiles in the room that everyone benefited from the band’s spark reciprocating in the crowd’s buzz. A work of art to set the tone for the rest of the evening!

Heartbroken Festival

Words by Martin Canga - Music Business student.

Sonne (Pronounced Sonn-uh) was the first band to start the event, they performed four songs in which they showed different sides to their musicality, as a rock band they are not afraid to use different types of instrumentation in their music. I noticed that all members cover more than one role within the band, for example Thomas Abercromby is in charge of the vocals, songwriting and guitar while Stephen Baker oversees the guitar synth and writing, on the drums Daniel Hyde and finally Dinis Correia on percussion. My favourite moments from the band’s performance were their performance of their debut single ‘Bear Trap’ (which you can find on their Spotify page) and their performance of an unreleased track titled ‘Sidewinder’, the song was truly an uplifter. I found Thomas’ roaring vocals the highlight of the song. I remember after the performance going up to Valentina Longo who serves as the bassist, secondary vocalist and manager of the band, begging to release the track officially. Sonne is a band to keep an eye on as they are unafraid to blend different styles of music like Krautrock, Hard Rock, Post-Rock and Post-Punk music.
